RP TIP OF THE WEEK: IC Consequences to IC actions

Sometimes, there are players who struggle with the in-character (IC) consequences of their IC actions. Often these difficulties stem from out-of-character (OOC) feelings and a desire for their character to be liked and protected. However, when players engage in certain RP themes or locations, they implicitly consent to potential consequences related to those themes. By going to those areas or places you are CONSENTING.

For example, when you go to Lazarus you understand that your character will be glamored to forget vampire activity. Or attending Redrum and your emotions being fed upon by Incarnates. These areas are set up with IC consequences. If you chose for your character to patron these locations then you have implied consent.

Sim Owner, Kaliope Karas has wrote a great blog that goes into great detail with examples. Like this one:

"Say your character is captured by another character who is known to be a cold-blooded killer. This character is known for its ruthlessness and disregard for life, you agree that you are up for a scene but you don’t want your character to be killed. Initially I would say to just avoid this RP all together. But if you decide to play the scene you really need to think of your character’s actions and demeanor here. Would it be unfair for your character to act cool and fearless, to challenge and unnecessarily or unrealistically provoke the killer simply because you agreed not to be killed? The “sensible” thing to do in such a scene is to act submissive or fearful. Not part of your character’s nature, you say? Well, it’s not part of the killer’s nature to let you live, and you are the one tied up."

To lean on your right to life or hide behind consent, is a form a godmodding. It is unfair to expect modification of their rp so it spares your character from IC consequences you deem too severe.

This is not to deter anyone from engaging in negative RP. Conflict and fights are fun.Getting in trouble ic’ly is fun. There’s a bit of an edge and adrenaline rush in such scenes that can be quite entertaining. But you really have to think things through before engaging in a scene that could have serious repercussions on your character. Is there law enforcement on the sim? Is there a council or order that may become involved? Is the victim well known or belong to an opposing faction? You need to think of the possible scenarios that could come from this RP and then make sure you think of the consequences before you act.
