Chimeras are an NPC Race in the Unnatural Universe, but they are available for temporary playable characters! Additionally, because of the nature of Chimeras, their vulnerabilities and capabilities may change between storylines. For information on the common Chimera found in the woods, read below:
Chimeras are beings with multiple Supernatural traits, named after the real-world "Chimera Syndrome," a biological phenomenon where two distinct sets of DNA merge within one body. This can result in different genetic makeups across different body parts. A useful analogy is a tie-dye pattern: if you mix red and blue, you get purple, representing a typical being (everyone is a homogenous blend of their parents). But if the colors swirl and remain distinct, like in tie-dye patterns, that’s a Chimera—traits that coexist but retain their individuality.
NPC Chimeras are now a permanent fixture in the Ashmore Woods (as well as in a few other parts of the world). They are not overwhelming in number (this isn’t the Chimera apocalypse), but they are here to stay. They appear sporadically, but there are times when there will be larger, more evolved groups for specific sim storylines. Players may roleplay encountering or battling them as part of their stories.
Players are also allowed to play Chimeras, but only as temporary, disposable characters. These characters exist in addition to a player’s regular character and offer a chance to try something new for a short time—whether for a change of pace or just to shake things up for a day.
"So that’s what they did with Jenny’s body!" Just kidding… maybe.
There’s no definitive proof of where the Chimeras came from, but those suspicious of Horizon believe these creatures are experiments gone wrong. It’s widely suspected that they were artificially and deliberately created. Maybe Horizon wants to harness Supernatural powers and take over the world! Maybe they’re testing Supernaturals' ability to fight so they can figure out how to wipe them out once and for all!
Or perhaps Chimeras are freak accidents of nature—the result of crossbreeding Supernatural species that were never meant to mix.
Whatever the truth is, one thing is certain: Long-lived supernaturals had never seen or heard of them before 2018. That was the year they started appearing—roaming the Ashmore woods in herds.
-Chimeras don’t have a definitive appearance, except for the distinctive "tie-dye" blend of traits from other Supernatural species whose DNA they carry. Imagine a werewolf with fins, or a Vampire covered in fur. Some might have additional appendages, like an octopus. Wildlife can also mutate into Chimeras, such as a Vampire Bear or a Werewolf Rabbit. The combinations make each Chimera unique in its own twisted way.
Just like a Chimera’s appearance depends on the supernatural species it resembles, so do its characteristics. However, unlike the Chimera used in sim-wide storylines, these are lower-end Chimeras, a bit easier to kill, less sentient, and more instinctual. They are driven by the need to hunt, eat, and survive by any means possible
Chimeras are a blend of two races present in Unnatural (including Human, but excluding Incarnate).
Chimeras that are part Waterborn may carry the Waterborn Toxin.
Chimera bites may (at player discretion) cause a mutation in the victim that turns them also, mimicking the Werewolf or Vampire bites that may turn someone–only the victim (including wildlife) won’t be Werewolf or Vampire, they’ll be Chimera. Chimera sickness will be similar to Werewolf-turning sickness, with fevers, rage, hallucinations, and physical changes that will finalize on the next full moon. This will require a Drabarni potion for healing.
Chimera may be killed by normal means, but some may have regenerative properties. Dismemberment or decapitation is the most effective way. Chimera bodies should be burned and not left behind
Injured Chimeras appear to attempt to heal/regenerate by absorbing magic/power from the earth, leaving the black “voids” or black patches of vegetation behind.
“Voids” are dark patches of vegetation drained of natural magic by Chimera. They absorb energy from nearby plant life, causing them to expand or spread, or from any Phral that comes in contact with them. Larger Voids can severely drain Phral, and those who fall unconscious on one may not survive. Pharl can heal Voids via cleansing and rituals.
“The Lab” is an abandoned facility deep under the quarry. It serves as a roleplay location, and for Chimera players looking for a place to “spawn”, this would be it. There are no marking that say its Horizon, but it is clear that some weird shit happened there. At any time, there would be 1-5 Chimeras lurking around.
However, this is not THE LAB... because there's more stuff out there!
